MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Rebecca Longvall (Boylston, Mass.) continued her stellar javelin throwing at the J. Elmer Swanson Wesleyan Invitational on April 18 with a season's best 116'5" to qualify for the New England Division III Championships held at MIT on May 1-2. The javelin was an especially strong event for the Seahawks as they took five of the top seven places. Longvall was followed in second place by Claire Manente (Southington, Conn.) with a toss of 97'9 and Freshman Olivia Conway (Jefferson, N.H.) with her first heave of the season of 79'10 in fourth.

Amy Irving (Bohemia, N.Y.) also bested the competition running a blistering 4:56.76 in the 1500m. Irving took the race out from the start and was never headed, finishing just four seconds off the New England qualifying standard.

Someone who did qualify for the New England Championships was Chrissy Fraga (Milford, Mass.) amassing a point total of 3268, eclipsing the qualifying standard by 118 points. Fraga contested the first four events of the seven-event endurance/skills test last week at Smith College where she competed in the 100m hurdles, the high jump, the shot put, and the 200m. At Wesleyan, she finished with the long jump, the javelin, and the 800m. Fraga set a new school record in the event.

A number of second places were collected by Salve Regina athletes. Victoria Varone (Providence, R.I.) cruised to the finish in the 5000m in 19:40.23, Samantha Whitaker (Smithfield, R.I.) soared 8'3.25 in the pole vault, Ellen Gensicki (North Haven, Conn.) launched the discus 71'8", and Tiffany Davila (Smithfield, R.I.) threw the hammer 107'6".

The meet saw Seahawks capturing a number of thirds as well. Erin McCarthy (Walpole, Mass.) tied her collegiate best in the 100m with a 13.30 and equaled that placing in the 200m with a collegiate best of 26.67, just seven hundredths of a second off New England qualifying. Emily Enoch (Amawalk, N.Y.) finished only .41 seconds off her collegiate best in the 100m hurdles in 19.54. In the throws Conway put the shot 31'7.5" while Hayley Cambrola (Bristol, R.I.) threw 86'8".

Coach Matt Hird reveled in the team's performance. "Great weather brought out the best in us. We recorded fifteen seasonal bests in events in which we had competed before, versus only nine results which weren't as good. Team mates were motivating team mates by their performances; especially as they waited to see if Chrissy would qualify in the Hep. All was good. We will be looking to maintain this enthusiasm into the conference meet next week."
