NORTON, Mass. (Saturday, April 13, 2024) – Sophomore Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) picked up wins in singles and doubles play to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over visiting Salve Regina University this morning in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play in a match that began on the outdoor Clark Tennis Courts and finished on the courts in the Beard Field House after rain forced play indoors.

The Lyons improve to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Seahawks drop to 2-9 and 0-3.

Prior to the match, Wheaton honored its seniors, Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) and Zoe West (Queens, N.Y.) with a pre-match ceremony.

The Lyons won two of three doubles to take a 2-1 edge heading into singles play, where Wheaton took four of six singles to capture the dual-match victory.

Greenlee combined with first year Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) to earn a dominant 8-0 win at number two doubles over Salve Regina junior Elena Murdock (Westerly, R.I.) and first year Madigan Murphy (York, Maine).

Greenlee dropped just three games in a 6-3, 6-0 effort at number two singles over Seahawk first year Stephanie Davis (Kinnelon, N.J.)

Mueller paired with Lyon sophomore Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) to overcome Davis and senior Alexa Stevens (Portsmouth, N.H.) with an 8-2 effort at first doubles.

West gained a victory at number six singles for Wheaton over sophomore Sadie Rieg (Carlisle, Pa.), winning the opening set with a grueling 7-6 (7) decision, before breezing to a 6-1 second set win.

Wheaton first year Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) won in straight sets at third singles over Murphy with a 6-3, 6-4 showing, while junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) posted a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at fourth singles over Murdock.

Salve Regina senior Graysen Scherer (Mystic, Conn.) combined with first year Kaydin Pinto (Acushnet, Mass.) to record an 8-5 result at number three doubles over the home team's tandem of West and sophomore Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.).

Stevens battled to a three-set win over Mueller at number one singles. Mueller cruised through the opening set, 6-2, for the Lyons before Stevens bounced back to knot the match at 1-1 after a 6-3 effort. She maintained her momentum going into the third set with a 6-2 win. Pinto gained the Seahawks' other point in singles action with a three-set decision at fifth singles over Ortiz. Pinto opened the match with a 6-4 first-set win, before Ortiz dominated the middle frame, 6-0. Pinto took the final set, 6-4, to register the singles win for the visitors.

Wheaton returns to action on Tuesday, April 16 when it travels to South Hadley, Mass. to take on NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College at 3:00 p.m., while Salve Regina entertains Emerson College in league action tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
