Seahawks sweep again for a 2-0 mark on the season

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team dropped its conference opener to visiting Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon at the Big Nine Tennis Courts by a 9-0 final. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) while the Colonels slip to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Salve Regina started the match with a 3-0 sweep of doubles play. Lauren Harvey (Edmond, Okla.) and Makenzie Sadler (Mystic, Conn.) blanked Hannah Faghan (Whitman, Mass.) and Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) 8-0 at first doubles. Sidara Cash-Sortwell (South Portland, Maine) and Rosario Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) fell at number two doubles to Abigail Burke (Harwich, Mass.) and Darcy Carlin (Brewster, N.Y.), 8-3. Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) and Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) dropped the third doubles point to Erin Stangel (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and Anna Godshalk (Orleans, Mass.) by an 8-2 final.

Five of the six singles matches were captured by the Seahawks in straight sets. The lone match that went the distance was the third singles point. After Burke won the first set 6-4, Daigle responded to win the second 6-2. With the sets knotted at one, they played a third set tiebreak where Burke edged Daigle, 10-6.

The Colonels return to the court on Monday, September 17 in a road match at UMass.-Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m. Salve Regina will next play on Tuesday, September 18 at home against Endicott at 3:00 p.m.
