Salve Regina suffers spring defeat to Springfield

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Springfield College women's tennis team ended their season on a high note as they defeated Salve Regina, 9-0, on Sunday afternoon. Under the direction of first-year head coach Chad Stoloff, the Pride closed out the year winners of three of their final four matches. 

The Pride breezed through doubles play against the Seahawks as all three teams won by 8-3 decisions.  Stoloff used the lineup of Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) at the No. 1 spot, Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) at No. 2, and Kelsey Whelpley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and Fiona Stickney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) at No. 3.

The Pride won in straight sets in all six of the singles bouts.  London took the top spot by a score of 6-1, 6-3, while Litchfield posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 2.  Etter delivered a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 and Nicole Piazza (Portland, Conn.) posted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4.

Shemms notched a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 and Stickney registered a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 for the Pride. Salve Regina falls to 4-11 on the season.
