NEWPORT, R.I. - Gordon College women's tennis remains unbeaten in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with its 9-0 victory over Salve Regina University in Newport.

The Seahawks (2-3, 2-1 CCC) entered the match with a 21-9 all-time mark against the Scots (4-1, 3-0 CCC), but the Gordon team had won the last three meetings, including an 8-1 triumph in a CCC quarterfinal in 2014.

Freshman Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and sophomore Katherine Jeffreys (Baltimore, Md.) earned the first point of the day with an eight-game sweep at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Abigail Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and senior Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) followed with a win at No. 1 doubles, dropping just one game.

Gabrielle Brucker (Eleva, Wis.) and Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) went back and forth with Seahawk sophomores Courtney Bailey (No. Dartmouth, Mass.) and Cristina Marsocci (No. Scituate, R.I.) at No. 3 doubles before finishing with an 8-4 victory. Three freshmen, a sophomore, and two seniors impacting the visitor's lineup.

Last time Salve Regina won in this series (7-2 at Bass River Tennis Club in 2012), current senior Kasey Walther (Natick, Mass.) won quickly in straight sets at No. 1 singles as a freshman on her 18th birthday. The Seahawk still maintains the top singles position, but her opponent that day, Drescher, now battles at the sixth singles spot.

The Gordon College depth proved too much for Salve Regina which managed just one set in singles play. Freshman Abigail Packard (Dudley, Mass.) dropped her first set at fifth singles before winning 6-2 in the second. With the team score already in Gordon's favor, Packard and Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) played a super tiebreak for the final set. Packard saved three match points against when trailing 9-6 to force another changeover, but Caron prevailed on the final two points.

Seahawk senior Julie Grant (Warwick, R.I.) faced Drescher at sixth singles and battled to a first-set tiebreak. The Scots senior won the second set without dropping a game.

Salve Regina travels to Beverly, Mass., on Tuesday to face three-time defending conference champion Endicott College in a match re-scheduled from last Thursday. Gordon returns to Rhode Island on Wednesday to matchup with Roger Williams University (4 p.m.).
