Wheaton edges Salve Regina, 5-4

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Wheaton College women's tennis team claimed a 5-4 non-conference victory over Salve Regina University on Tuesday evening at the Leroy Avenue tennis courts.

Wheaton held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play as junior Stassy Furber (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) and senior Kathryn Burleson (Osterville, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) earned an 8-2 triumph at No. 2 and first-year Jodi Katz (Needham, Mass./Needham) and sophomore Michelle Trainor (Amesbury, Mass./Saint Thomas Aquinas) produced an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position.

First-year Cristina Marsocci (North Scituate, R.I./Bay View Academy) and junior Julie Grant (Warwick, R.I./Warwick Veterans) doubled up the Lyons at No. 3 doubles to put the Seahawks on the scoreboard.

The teams split the six singles matches with Salve Regina taking Nos. 3, 4, and 6, each in straight sets.

Sophomore Taylor Amendola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) earned the victory at No. 3 singles while freshman Courtney Bailey (No. Dartmouth, Mass./BMC Durfee) claimed her team-leading 11th singles win at No. 4 for the Seahawks. Grant contributed her second point of the day for Salve Regina with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 singles.

Katz defeated Salve Regina sophomore Emma Gruber (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) by a 6-4, 6-3 score for her first ever collegiate victory at No. 1. Trainor cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 2 against senior Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa./Sanford School) and junior Caroline Stanclift (Camden, Maine/Cushing Academy) locked up the victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win.

The Lyons improve to 8-0 all-time against the Seahawks, but Salve Regina posts its most points against Wheaton in any of the eight dual matches.
