NEWPORT, R.I. - Rhode Island College junior captain Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, Conn.) rallied for a three-set victory at second singles to break a 4-4 tie and give the visiting Anchorwomen a 5-4 win over Salve Regina University women's tennis in Newport.

Over two hours earlier in doubles action, Brown had paired with sophomore Tressa Cannata (Cranston, R.I.) to score an 8-5 win over Seahawk freshman Taylor Amendola (Westbrook, Conn.) and senior captain Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.).

Salve Regina (0-2) got its first point of the season and the first point of the match when junior Hayley Maxwell (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and sophomore Kasey Walther (Natick, Mass.) paired for an 8-3 win at first doubles.

The Seahawks were close in the other two doubles matches but Brown and Cannata pulled out a victory to tie the score before Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, R.I.) and Julie Reddy (Greenville, R.I.) held on for an 8-6 win over Gina Ciliberti (West Islip, N.Y.) and Emma Gruber (New Canaan, Conn.), and a 2-1 lead for the Anchorwomen.

Sophomore Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.) increased the lead to 3-1 with her straight-set victory over Walther at first singles. The lead grew to 4-1 when Reddy defeated Elizabeth DiFilippo (West Chester, Pa.) at fourth singles.

Salve Regina had won the first set in each of the remaining four singles matches. Liguori secured the final point at fifth singles to make the score 4-2. Amendola slipped in the second set before shutting out Martin in the third set at sixth singles.

Gruber's two set victory lasted longer than Amendola's three-setter. Meanwhile, Ciliberti and Brown waged a three-set battle with darkness looming. The Seahawk freshman won the first game of the set, but Brown broke right back and held for a 2-1 lead on the changeover. Brown led 3-2 before winning the final three games of the match to lift the Anchorwomen to a 3-0 mark on the season.

Salve Regina returns to conference action when it hosts Western New England on Saturday (1 p.m.).
