NEWPORT, R.I. - In honor of Meghan Strathman '03, a former Salve Regina women's tennis player who died in a car accident in April 2003 - one month before her graduation, the ninth annual Megs™ Doubles clinic will now be held on Sunday, April 29, at the Leroy Avenue tennis courts. Registration begins at 1:15 p.m. The new date is due to rain forecast for this weekend.

Parents/guardians may download a registration form (.pdf) on the Salve Regina University women's tennis website.

The event has been established to connect the two passions that Meghan Strathman held so dearly ... tennis and children. Strathman, an outstanding member of the Seahawk women's tennis team for three years, earned recognition for her commitment to academic and athletic excellence, and her contributions to the overall development of the athletics program, with the Brother Michael Reynolds Award in 2002.

An award in honor of Meghan Strathman was established by the Salve Regina athletic department the following year. In addition, when the news of Meghan's tragic death hit the campus community, her roommates and friends, Kristy Tringali '04 and Barbara Palmer '03, organized a spaghetti dinner to raise money for a scholarship fund in her honor. Now, as the ninth anniversary of Strathman's death approaches, her scholarship fund has benefitted several students.

Strathman had been a student-teacher at the Coggeshall School in Newport before her untimely death. Students from Coggeshall and other area schools have attended previous Megs™ Doubles clinics. Participants are asked to wear athletic clothing including sneakers. Youth racquets are available (courtesy of Wal*Mart) and participants may bring their own.
