Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University women's soccer defeated Nichols College, 3-0, in the final game of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular season. The Seahawks (7-7-0, 4-4-0 CCC) clinch the No. 6 seed in the league postseason which begins Saturday; the Bison (4-12-1, 0-8-0 CCC) end their season with four consecutive shutouts in league play.

Salve Regina scored in the sixth minute and held the 1-0 lead when play was halted at 13:19 with thunder. Play resumed at 4 p.m. after both teams were off the field for a half hour.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina owns the edge in the all-time series, 16-8-3, and the Seahawks have won six of the last seven and have an 8-1-1 mark in the last 10 meetings.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina senior Abby McMackin (Walpole, Mass.) was held without a goal but the Seahawk offense still flows through the forward who assisted on a pair of goals.
  2. Salve Regina junior Emily Szemreylo (Marlborough, Conn.) handled the majority of corner kicks for Salve Regina and delivered the game-winning goal (her first of the season) on her second corner of the afternoon in the sixth minute.
  3. Salve Regina senior Carly Pala (Milford, Mass.) recorded her second shutout of the season, and school-record 11th of her career, by stopping five Bison shots.

Key Stat of the Game
Salve Regina dominated in corner kick opportunities (9-1) and shots (21-8).

Turning Point
Emily Szemreylo's first corner kick crossed in front of the goal before deflected out by a Bison, to give the junior another corner kick from the opposite side. With her left foot, she sent it long once again and then it hooked right in after it passed senior goalkeeper Brooke Downey (Middleboro, Mass.).

Quick Hits

  • Sophomore Jamie Robert (Holyoke, Mass.) notched her sixth goal of the season for a 2-0 lead in the 41st minute. She and McMackin (14) are the only Seahawks with more than one goal on the season.
  • Sophomore Carah Cote (Adams, Mass.) finished the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 88th minute.
  • Seahawks finish their 2018 home schedule with a 6-3 mark in nine games; it includes two at Toppa Field and two at Gaudet Field. Most wins at home since a 7-2 mark in 2012.
  • Downey finished with six saves in a complete-game effort.
  • Weather impacted play at other CCC venues as well with Gordon College at Curry College tied at 1-1 with 32:58 left in the second half. That result will impact seeding for the Nos. 2-4 spots.
