Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior forward Abby McMackin (Walpole, Mass.) scored a goal in each half as Salve Regina University women's soccer edged Eastern Nazarene College, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in non-league play at Reynolds Field.

The Lions fall to 1-1-0 on the season with the setback while the Seahawks win their season opener for the first time since 2011.

The home team snagged a 1-0 edge in the 13th minute as McMackin netted her first goal of the season with a left-footed strike.

The guests answered in the 25th minute to level the match at 1-1. Victoria Hern (Salem, N.H.) buried a left-footed attempt into the right side of the cage to pick up her second marker of the year.

Eastern Nazarene posted six shots in the first frame while Salve Regina attempted nine.

The Seahawks regained a one-goal advantage, 2-1, in the 84th minute. McMackin fired in a right-footed shot from 12 yards out after a centering-pass by Devyn DeFalco (Brockton, Mass.) to tally her second goal of the game.

The Lions finished with seven shots in the contest. Salve Regina generated 17 shots and owned an 11-0 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Sarah Moschini (Upton, Mass.) faced eight shots and stopped six, while senior Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) made five saves for the Seahawks.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina leads the all-time series, 17-4-1, and wins for just the second time in the last seven meetings. The Seahawks win their season opener for the first time since 2011.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina senior forward Abby McMackin (Walpole, Mass.) found the back of the net twice for her 25th and 26th career goals.
  2. Salve Regina sophomore back Carah Cote (Adams, Mass.) played the entire 90 minutes clearing the Seahawk defensive zone.
  3. Eastern Nazarene freshman goalkeeper Sarah Moshini (Upton, Mass.) faced constant pressure from the Seahawks and her teammates relying on the keeper to clear out.

Key Stat of the Game
Zero substitutions for Eastern Nazarene which only dressed 11 healthy players. The conservative Lions looked to control the ball on their half and wait for a breakout; by contrast, the Seahawks were whistled for offsides five times.
