Ledin leads Beacons over Seahawks

NEWPORT, R.I. - For three straight games, Salve Regina University women's soccer has been either tied or within one goal for the first 50 minutes of action, but the Seahawks have surrendered 10 goals in 120 minutes (final 40 minutes of last three games). Today, it was a one-person scoring machine for UMass Boston (9-4) as junior forward Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored five goals (four in the final 30 minutes) to lead the Beacons to a 5-0 non-league win over the Seahawks at Reynolds Field.

Ledin kept Salve Regina goalkeeper Jacqueline McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) busy with 14 shots, 11 on net. MacPherson finished with 10 saves for the Seahawks (2-11-1).

Four other Beacons combined for the four other shots on goal.

Ledin (pronounced LAY-din) got help from her teammates on all five tallies; senior Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) assisted on the first-half goal. In the second half, sophomore Kara Peters (Feeding Hills, Mass.) fed passes to Ledin at 59:09 and 71:44.

Senior Sam Cristoforo (Rockland, Mass.) and junior Amanda Pugliese (Pembroke, Mass.) assisted on goals three and four, respectively. Ledin set and school record for goals and points in a game.

Junior Lauren Bulk (Portsmouth, R.I.) led the Seahawks with three shots, two on goal. Salve Regina drew the visitors offsides 13 times.

The Beacons have won all three games with the Seahawks in a series that began in 2011.

UMass Boston now hosts another Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) school, Western New England University, on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.). Salve Regina has two CCC road contests before its final regular-season home game (Oct. 26); the Seahawks next play at Nichols College on Saturday (11 a.m.).
