Galla and Birrell receive all-conference honors for second-consecutive year

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University junior Liz Galla (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and sophomore Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) were each selected to The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Women's Soccer All-Conference team for the second-consecutive year.

A Second Team selection as a rookie last season, Birrell was named to the First Team in 2010 after leading the Seahawks in scoring and placing third in TCCC in both goals (13) and points (31). She also tied for second in TCCC in game-winning goals with five and dished out five assists, which placed her in a tie for fifth. Birrell recorded a four-goal game against New England College on Oct. 16 and potted three against Wentworth on Sept. 18. Overall, she finished with four multi-goal games, and in the process became Salve Regina's all-time single-season leader in goals (19) and points (45). Birrell also became the school's all-time scoring in both assists (18) and points (86), and ranks second in goals (34), one shy of the top spot held by Kerrin D'Agnelli (2001-04) with 35.

Galla, meanwhile, is a repeat Second Team selection after she tied for the conference lead with seven assists and placed fourth in goals (11) and points (30). She recorded a pair of hat tricks in consecutive games against New England College (Oct. 16) and Western New England (Oct. 19) and finished the season with three multi-goal games and six games with 3+ points. Overall, Galla racked up 37 points in 2010, which is the third-highest single-season total in Salve Regina history. For her career, she ranks fourth all-time with 27 goals and third all-time with 70 points.

Roger Williams took home three of the five major awards as Laurin Pendleton was named Player of the Year, Hannah Noel was tabbed Rookie of the Year, and Abigail Jackson received Coach of the Year honors. Colby-Sawyer's Katherine Lee received the Senior Scholar-Athlete award and Anna Maria received the Team Sportsmanship Award.

The Seahawks finished their season 10-9 overall and posted an 8-5 mark in conference play. On Saturday, they suffered a 4-1 loss at University of New England in the first round of TCCC Championships.
