Galla, Boutsioulis lead Seahawks past Bison, 2-0

NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior Liz Galla (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and freshman Emilia Boutsioulis (Cheshire, Conn.) each scored first-half goals to lead the Salve Regina University women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Nichols College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

Freshman Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded eight saves in net for the Seahawks, who have won three of their last four matches and improved to 5-5 (3-2 TCCC) on the season. The Bison slipped to 7-3 on the season and 2-3 on the season.

Boutsioulis scored the only goal the Seahawks would need 4:17 into the contest. The play started with a corner kick from the right side by junior Maggie Kane (Bangor, Maine), who sent the ball into the box. Galla played the ball to Boutsioulis, who turned and fired a shot into the top right corner of the net for her first-career marker.

Just past the midway point of the half, Galla doubled the Seahawks lead when she dribbled into the box, cut back and fired a shot into the lower left side of the net. The goal was her fifth of the season and came at 31:49.

"This is a good conference win for us. It puts us at 3-2 heading into a big game at Colby-Sawyer this weekend," said Seahawks head coach Kerri Scroope. "We continue to get better every day, especially coming off of Saturday's win. Kelsey Jacobsen (above) did an excellent job shutting down the reigning TCCC Rookie of the Year (Samantha Abro). She did an amazing job defensively against her."

The Bison held a 16-15 edge in shots but were plagued by four off-sides fouls. Sophomore Maureen Lynch (Holbrook, Mass.) started in goal for Nichols and recorded four saves. The loss drops her to 5-2 on the season while Lane improves to 4-2.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Colby-Sawyer for a 3:30 contest. The Bison travel to Quincy, Mass. for a 12:30 p.m. match with Eastern Nazarene.
