Birrell named TCCC Offensive POW

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University sophomore Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) has been named The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Birrell tallied 10 points (4-2-10) in two games last week as the Seahawks improved to 9-6 on the season and 6-3 in the conference. After dishing out an assist in Salve Regina's 4-0 win over Anna Maria on Wednesday, Birrell exploded for four goals and an assist in a 7-1 thumping of New England College on Saturday. In the process, she established a new single-season school record for goals with 17.

Birrell's selection marks the second time in 2010 she's had Offensive POW honors bestowed upon her. Four weeks ago, Birrell received POW honors after scoring five goals in a 2-1 week for the Seahawks. On the season, she leads the team and the conference with 17 goals and 38 points, which is three shy of the single-season school record of 41 she set as a freshman last year. For her career, Birrell has 79 points (32-15-79), which is two shy Kerrin D'Agnelli's mark of 81 set from 2001-04.

The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday when they host Western New England at Brother Michael Reynolds Field at 3:30 p.m.
