Bears top Seahawks, 3-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Bridgewater State College women's soccer team opened the 2009 season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Salve Regina University this afternoon at Swenson Field in Bridgewater.

 

Junior forward Kristina Ortiz (Dedham, Mass.) notched a pair of goals in the opening day win. She opened the scoring in the 34th minute as she converted off a corner kick from senior midfielder Christine Soucy (Rockland, Mass.).

 

The Bears (1-0) made it a 2-0 game less than ten minutes into the second half. Senior midfielder Jacklyn Wisocky (Brockton, Mass.) dribbled in from the right side and ripped a shot into the back of the net from 20 yards out.

 

The Seahawks (1-1) cut the deficit to 2-1 off a goal from sophomore forward Liz Galla (Beacon Falls, Conn.) in the 74th minute. Freshman forward Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) assisted on the tally.

 

Bridgewater put the game out of reach as Ortiz notched her second marker of the day with just over three minutes to play. Senior forward Ashley Hersey (Newburyport, Mass.) set up the goal as she slipped a pass to an unguarded Ortiz in front of the net. Ortiz ripped a shot inside the right post to give BSC the 3-1 advantage.

 

Freshman Allison Dexter (Plymouth, Mass.) played well in goal for the Bears in relief of starting netminder Kayla Grover (Haverhill, Mass.). Dexter made nine saves after entering the game in the 13th minute of play to record her first career victory. Grover made two saves before leaving the game with an injury.

 

Senior Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, R.I.) turned aside 11 shots in goal for ther Seahawks who were outshot by a margin of 23-17.

 

BSC will return to action on Wednesday, September 9th as the Bears travel to Eastern Connecticut State University for a 4 o'clock match with the Warriors. Salve plays host to Fitchburg State College on Saturday at 1.
