INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 13, Wheaton 12
Records: Salve Regina (8-5,2-4 NEWMAC), Wheaton (7-6,4-2 NEWMAC)
Last matchup: This is the first time in program history that the Seahawks have beaten the Lyons. Beginning with the 1997 spring season, women's lacrosse has an 1-8 history against Wheaton. The last contest on February 26, 2023, was a 15-7 loss for the Seahawks. Head coach Meghan Malloy spent four years as an assistant coach for the women's lacrosse team at Wheaton before joining the Seahawks in the fall of 2023.

BREAKDOWN:

Wheaton got the day going driven by Abigail Mountain's goal 3:30 into play. Samantha Moleti (Township of Washington, N.J.) took control for the Seahawks with a first quarter hat trick. The only quarter that either team found a lead after was the first period, when Salve Regina finished it out ahead 4-3.

The Lyons inched ahead to tie the game at 7-7 going into halftime. Cameron Baston (Plantsville, Conn.), Stella McCormack (East Hampton, N.Y.) and Daniella Bruno (Niantic, Conn.) all found the back of the net in the second quarter.

Salve Regina came out of the halftime break with a two-goal run in the first four minutes of quarter three, but Wheaton's Gabs Smart went on her own run in the last 2:30 of the quarter to tie it once again at 9-9.

It appeared that the Lyons could have the advantage when they put a two-goal separation between themselves and the hosting Seahawks but in the final 2:45 of regulation Moleti and Baston tied the game with two free position goals. The Seahawks gained possession in the last minute but were unable to make something happen until overtime. To secure Salve Regina the win Holly Sullivan (Pembroke, Mass.) grabbed the ball off the draw and progressed to the Lyons end. Threshie sank a goal from the middle of the key and the Seahawks earned a 13-12 NEWMAC win.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Goalie Ellee Kopecky (Warren, R.I.) made 12 saves across 60:59. Kopecky stepped up and joined the Seahawks late in the season to provide support in net after the team faced several injuries. As a senior, she also served in net for the Salve Regina women's ice hockey team this season. On the ice Kopecky made 194 saves and posted a save percentage of .915 over the course of the 2023-24 season.
  • Jenna Langan, the Lyons goalie put a stop to 13 Seahawk shots.
  • Salve Regina picked up a total of 13 ground balls.
  • Wheaton beat Salve Regina off the draw 19-10.
