Pioneers outlast Seahawk women's lacrosse 16-8

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Friday, April 5, 2024)-- The Smith College Pioneers pulled ahead of Salve Regina women's lacrosse 16-8 in a hearty battle that took place in the latter half of the matchup.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Smith 16, Salve Regina 8
Records: Salve Regina (7-4, 1-3 NEWMAC), Smith (5-7, 2-3 NEWMAC)
Last matchup: The Seahawks are 1-1 all-time against the Pioneers. The only prior meeting was a 11-7 win on March 15, 2015.
BREAKDOWN:
Salve Regina hung with Smith for the first quarter and only trailed the Pioneers by one goal after 15 minutes. Smith's Kyra Hawk recorded the first goal of the day two minutes in to the encounter and Jennie Arancio extended the lead to 2-0 but the next two goals were Seahawk successes coming from Holly Sullivan and Daniella Bruno. Following two more Smith goals, Cameron Baston made it a one-point game going into quarter two.
The contest pivoted when Smith outscored Salve Regina 7-1 in the second quarter. Edie Threshie netted the Seahawks only goal, receiving a pass from Kayli Garcia at the top of the circle and sending it in high with 3:38 remaining. At halftime Smith was ahead 11-4.
After securing three unanswered goals in the third quarter, Smith led 14-4 with 15 minutes left to play. Although the Seahawks put a stop to the Pioneers run, scoring four to Smith's two goals in the final quarter it wasn't quite enough to get back in the game. Smith earned the NEWMAC win 16-8. Holly Sullivan, Alix Madden, Cameron Baston and Kayli Garcia were the change makers in the final period.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Grace Haesche faced 32 shots and put a stop to 16 attempts.
- The Seahawks posted 18 shots in total, forcing the Pioneers to make 10 saves.
- Salve Regina went 2-4 on free position shots. The Pioneers never saw the opportunity, going 0-0.
- Even though the Pioneers took control with a eight-point lead, the Seahawks only allowed the Pioneers one more draw control win across the contest.
- Led by Holly Sullivan and Kayli Garcia the Seahawks picked up 11 ground balls.

Tomorrow, April 6, the Seahawks will take on No. 21 Babson College at 12 p.m. in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
