MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Saturday, January 13, 2024)-- With 2:59 gone in overtime, graduate woman's ice hockey captain, Maddie Cox, drove the Seahawks to a 3-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Western New England University.

Salve Regina was down 2-1, but with less than 30 seconds remaining freshman Emily Wroblewski tied it up, sending the contest into overtime. The three-on-three five-minute overtime period gave women's ice hockey the time they needed to find the back of the net.

Women's ice hockey celebrated alumni night by inviting alums back for a 12:30 p.m. pregame scrimmage. Seahawk alumni took the ice for a ceremonial puck drop before the action started.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 3, Western New England 2
Records: Salve Regina (8-5-3, 5-3-1 CCC), Western New England (9-4-2, 7-3-1 CCC)
All-Time Series: Tonight's result brings the Seahawks to 2-5-1 all-time against the Golden Bears. The team fell 6-2 last night in game one of the home-and-home series.

BREAKDOWN:

  • Period I: Golden Bears' Rieley Jessie-Gerelli and Seahawks' Livia Krzywulak started the day off minding their respective nets. Western New England got off to a quick start, besting the Seahawks to gain possession off the first faceoff. It took both teams the majority of the opening 20 minutes to find their grooves. Salve Regina acquired a two-minute team infraction for too many players on the ice at 15:02 into the period and 1:30 later the Golden Bears scored their first goal of the evening on a power play opportunity.
  • Period II: Western New England sneaked past the Seahawks for another goal 12:48 into period two (scored by Jenna Lynch). However, Gina Richard got the Seahawks on the board with 15:34 down, making it a 2-1 game.
  • Period III: With 18:39 down Salve Regina made the decision to pull Krzywulak from the net, making room for a sixth skater on the ice. This move gave the Seahawks an advantage and Emily Wroblewski slapped in the game tying goal at 19:37.6 down in period three.
  • OT: Krzywulak returned to the ice for the overtime period. Riley Esposito met Golden Bears' Allison Walker met at center ice, with Salve Regina earning the faceoff win. The Seahawks successfully kept the puck in the attack zone, firing off two shots right away. It took Salve Regina several line shifts to make anything happen, but for her second goal of the season, Maddie Cox cut to the net from the left hand side, slicing in front of the goal and sending the puck over the shoulder of Jessie-Gerelli for a 3-2 overtime win.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Seahawks outshot the Golden Bears 35-25. The Seahawks recorded their highest shots on net in the third period (13).
  • Western New England was 2-3 on the power play and Salve Regina went 0-1.
  • The Seahawks served six minutes on three infractions and the Golden Bears sat out two minutes for one penalty.
