MIDDLETOWN, RI. (Saturday, January 6, 2024) --For game two of the St. Catherine University series, the Seahawks tied it up with 50 seconds gone in the third period. However, it was the Wildcats who emerged on top with a goal three minutes later for a 3-2 final score.

Emily Wagner and Gina Richard both achieved goals. Richard scored in both matchups against the Wildcats. Yesterday she earned the team's second goal at 15:48 into the second period.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 2, St. Catherine 3
Records: Salve Regina (7-4-3,4-2-1 CCC), St. Catherine (5-6-1,1-4-1 MIAC)
All-Time Series: After today and yesterday's 4-2 defeat the Seahawks move to 1-3 against the Wildcats in all-time series records.

BREAKDOWN:

  • Period I: Both the Seahawks and the Wildcats began the day with a turnaround of less than 24 hours, but they took the ice with concentration and tenacity. Like yesterday, it took some time for anyone to establish a lead. Nearing the end of the period, at 18:32 into the event Madi Fleming got the Wildcats on the board first. Again, similar to Friday's contest, the Seahawks followed up the Wildcats primary goal with a success of their own just 30 seconds later. Emily Wagner (from Maddie Cox and Emma Gotthelf) brought the score to 1-1 entering the first intermission.
  • Period II: Neither team acquired any penalties for the duration of the first and second periods. Paige Loidolt and Riley Esposito took the initial faceoff, with St. Catherine earning possession. Samantha McKenzie fired off the first shot of the period, in an effort to keep the puck in the attack zone. However, the Wildcats managed to take the next eight shots, keeping the action out of their end. At 16:20 down, Josie VanKuyk put St. Catherine ahead 2-1 with an even strength, unassisted goal.
  • Period III: Right out of the gate Gina Richard swooped in, sending the puck sailing past the Wildcats' goalie with 19:10 left to play. The Wildcats endurance got the better of Salve Regina when both teams felt the fatigue that comes in the final period. The Seahawks were called for a bodychecking infraction with 2:30 down, giving the Wildcats the opportunity they needed. At 4:04 the final scoring action came on the St. Catherine power play when Abby Pirkl achieved the game winning goal, bringing the score to 3-2. Even though Sydney Baxter left the goal with 35 seconds remaining the buzzer sounded in favor of the Wildcats.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Sydney Baxter stood between the posts for 59:25, making 17 saves.
  • Wildcats' Anna Friendshuh remained in net for the full 60 minutes, making 11 saves.
  • Salve Regina served four minutes on two infractions and St. Catherine was sent to the penalty box once for two minutes.
  • The Wildcats recorded 20 shots on goal and Salve Regina posted 13. The majority of Salve Regina's shots on net came in the first period (7), and St. Catherine recorded their highest effort in the third period (8).
