Cardinals use second period surge to top Seahawks

SEAHAWK WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY RESULTS
Wesleyan 4, Salve Regina 3
Middletown, Rhode Island - Howard Rink (St. George's)
Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Summary
The Wesleyan University women's ice hockey team scored three goal in the second period to go from 2-0 down to up 3-2 on its way to a 4-3 victory over Salve Regina University in non-conference action Tuesday night.

Series and Streaks
This was the 11th meeting between the Seahawks and the Cardinals. The Cardinals snap a two game losing streak with the win tonight.

Three Stars of the Game
1 - WES senior Jess Brennan (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) - scored twice in the second period.
2 - WES junior Alex Horton (Great Neck, N.Y.) - scored in the third period to give the Cardinals their largest lead.
3 - SRU senior Amanda Cronin (Medfield, Mass.) - scored late in the third to draw the Seahawks within a goal

Turning Point
Salve Regina had led 2-0 after one period, but the second period belonged to the Cardinals. They scored three straight goals to take the lead. The Seahawks had difficulty clearing the puck from their zone and turned it over to Jess Brennan who fired a shot on net that found its way in. Then Rachel Aronow (West Hartford, Conn.) tallied the only powerplay goal of the day to knot things up 2-2. Brennan would add her second of the period on a quick wrister from the left-wing side on the break to give the Cardinals their first lead, a lead they did not relinquish the rest of the night.

Quick Hits

  • Caroline Prezioso (Trumbull, Conn.) got the scoring started for the Seahawks. She tipped in a loose puck that had hopped over the Cardinals goalie for her first career goal.
  • Taylor Chisholm (Discovery Bay, Calif.) added her second of the season to give the Seahawks their 2-0 lead in the first period.
  • Amanda Cronin rounded out the Seahawks scoring with her third period goal. She collected a loose puck near the blue line and carried it wide with speed, then angled to the net, snapping a wrister five-hole to draw the Seahawks within a goal.
  • The Cardinals kept the pressure on late, never allowing the Seahawks clean possession of the puck to get the goalie to the bench for an extra attacker.
  • In net for Salve Regina, Jennifer O'Connell (Marstons Mills, Mass.) made 22 saves while Sam Smith (Tarentum, Pa.) stopped 26 shots for the Cardinals between the pipes.
  • The Seahawks owned a 29-26 advantage in shots in the game.
  • Neither team was hot on the powerplay. Salve Regina went 0-for-5 while the Cardinals were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
