CCC Rookie of the Week: Sofia Neary

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) has selected Salve Regina University freshman forward Sofia Neary (Wayne, N.J.) as its Rookie of the Week for women's basketball.

Neary filled up the stat sheet this week for Salve Regina as the Seahawks played to a 2-0 record to open the season. She had eight points, five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks on Thursday (Nov. 10) in a 69-58 win over Salem State. Then on Saturday (Nov. 12), on the road against Johnson and Wales (R.I.), she scored a game-high 17 and added 14 rebounds for the double-double in a 70-55 win. She was 6-for-9 (66.7 percent) from the field in that game and also had two assists and a block. For the week, she averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

"Sofia came up big for us this week, on both ends of the floor," said head coach Cori Hughes. "She (and her sister Bri, for that matter) really owned the boards and scored when we needed it most."

Salve Regina (2-0) travels to face UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, November 16, in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
