Seahawks top Bison on the road, 92-83

DUDLEY, Mass. (February 2, 2022) - Salve Regina University women's basketball netted 90+ points for the first time in 13 years as the Seahawks defeated the host Bison of Nichols College, 92-83, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

The Seahawks (9-8, 8-3 CCC), winners of eight of their last 11 games, were led by Amanda Folan (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Ashley Rourke (Londonderry, N.H.), both with 20 points apiece. Folan tossed in a career-high six 3-pointers.

Salve Regina led by 11 after the first quarter (27-16) before Nichols trimmed its deficit to 10 (47-37) by halftime. The Bison dominated the third quarter with an 11-point advantage (29-18) to take a 66-65 lead heading into the final quarter. Trailing 65-60, the Bison scored the last six points of the third and then the first two points of the fourth for their best run of the game (8).

Hadley Houghton (Madison, Conn.) hit a 3-pointer at the 8:10 mark in the fourth for the largest Bison lead (74-67) before Megan Henaghan (Whitman, Mass.) and Rourke both sank a pair of free throws to chip into the seven-point deficit. Folan's trey at 7:03 tied the score at 74-74 and the Seahawks were in the midst of a 17-point run.

Salve Regina had its largest lead, 18 points (46-28),  at 3:19 in the second quarter following Rourke's free throws.

The Seahawks had three players with double-doubles with Henaghan (10 points, 13 rebounds) and Rourke (20 points, 14 rebounds) joined by Briana Neary (Wayne, N.J.) who contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds. Rourke's six assists matched Seahawk teammate Morgan Shuey (Corning, Iowa) for team high while the latter also finished with 19 points.

The last time Salve Regina hit the 90 mark was February 4, 2009, in Bristol, R.I., in a 91-73 win against Roger Williams. The last time the Seahawks scored more than 92 was February 17, 2005, in Westfield, Mass., in a 94-62 win against Regis College.

Salve Regina's all-time single-game scoring mark came on a 105-52 win against Nichols College on February 9, 1998, at home against Nichols College.

The Seahawks play at Suffolk University on Saturday in Boston (1 p.m.).
