SALVE REGINA VS. WESTERN NEW ENGLAND

  • With a sweep of the season series, Western New England takes the lead in the all-time series, 9-8.
  • The Golden Bears took a 70-49 decision last month in Springfield ... Jillian Woodward came off the bench to score a then-season-high 13 points and grab seven rebounds ... Dorothy O'Neill led all players with 17 points ... the Golden Bears made 20 of 25 free throws (80 percent) while the Seahawks made eight of 19 (42.1 percent).
  • Western New England University overcame a 16-point first-half deficit to defeat Salve Regina University, 58-52, last Tuesday at Rodgers Recreation Center ... Chelsea Vujs [pronounced VOICE] scored 13 of her team-high 21 points in the second half ... Meaghan Harden led the Seahawks with 21 points to reach the 1,900 career point milestone, and had a game-high 10 rebounds ... Emily Anderson scored 16 points including the go-ahead 3-pointer at 6:28 in the 4th quarter ... after making 13 of 26 field goals (50 percent) in the first half to build a 15-point lead at the break, Salve Regina shot just 20 percent in the second half (five of 25).

  • The nationally-ranked Nor'easters conclude the CCC regular-season with a perfect 18-0 ledger, and with 17 consecutive wins improve to 22-3 on the year.
  • For the Seahawks (10-15, 9-9 CCC), Meaghan Harden went scoreless in the first half but racked up 22 points by the final buzzer, and pulled in six rebounds. Allyson Esielionis also found her range in the second half, scoring all of her 12 points from long distance. Jillian Woodward grabbed a team-high eight caroms. The visitors knocked down eight triples the rest of the way and shot 50 percent from the floor, but it was not enough.

LAST TIME OUT -  WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 70, ENDICOTT 62 - FEBRUARY 20, 2016

  • Western New England University women's basketball utilized a 17-0 fourth quarter run to turn a four-point deficit into a 13-point advantage, defeating Endicott College 70-62 in its regular season finale.
  • The Golden Bears were led by sophomore guard Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.), who scored a career-high 23 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line to go with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Junior Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) added 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, five rebounds and two assists.
  • Senior forward Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) rounded out Western New England's three double-figure scorers with ten points on 4-of-8 shooting, in the process moving past Yovana Brown '87 into sole possession of eighth place on the program's all-time scoring list. Vujs, who now has 1284 career points, also added a team-high eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in the road victory.

IN THE POSTSEASON

  • Salve Regina (seven) and University of New England (five) have combined for all but three of the conference championships since 2001.
  • Only former member Colby-Sawyer interrupts the Seahawks-Nor'easters' string of championships.
  • On the men's side, eight different schools have claimed titles in the last 15 years.
