Women's Basketball #5 - Seahawks remember lost loved ones in Relay for Life (October 18, 2014)
NEWPORT, R.I. - With virtually every member of the Salve Regina women's basketball team sharing a connection with someone who has been a victim of cancer or - even better - a survivor of cancer, the Seahawks strengthened the bond by participating in a Relay for Life event last October.
In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation's biggest health concern cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.
Members of the Seahawks took turns walking around the track with head coach Cori Hughes, and her senior co-captains Brianna Del Valle (Belchertown, Mass.) and Laura Anne Dinan (Monterey, Mass.) taking the final turn.
