Salve Regina outlasts Titans in 2 OT, 63-59

NASSAU, Bahamas - The Westminster College women's basketball team lost in double overtime to Salve Regina, 63-59, Monday in the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout. The Titans lost their seventh straight game and for the second time this season they had at least 11 more rebounds than points in an overtime loss.

Westminster is 2-8 on the season, while Salve Regina improves to 6-2.

The Titans out-rebounded the Seahawks 70-54 for the second-most rebounds in team history. Earlier this season, Westminster out-rebounded Hiram 77-47 in a 67-64 overtime loss, setting a new school record.

There were plenty of opportunities for rebounds as Westminster shot a season-low 27.9 percent (24-86) from the field compared to Salve Regina at 33.3 percent (25-75).

Sophomore forward Katie Hughes (Boardman, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) led the Titans with a season-high 13 points, one shy of a career high, while also pulling down 13 rebounds for her third career double-double and the second this season.

Sophomore forward Andi Ridge (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Starpoint), junior forward Emily Dolsak (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) and senior guard Kaitlin McCarthy (Lowellville, Ohio/Lowellville) each bucketed nine points for the Titans, while Ridge ripped down 16 rebounds and Dolsak secured 13 boards.

Ridge's 16 rebounds tie a season and career high and they also tie for the fifth most in a game in team history. Dolsak's 13 rebounds were also a career high. McCarthy led the Titans with six assists.

Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) led Salve Regina with 18 points and a game-high 20 rebounds. Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) also sank 10 points to go with six assists.

Westminster's largest lead of the game was six points, achieved at halftime (27-21) and with 12:18 left in regulation (38-32).

The Seahawks came back from a four-point Westminster lead with 2:18 left to send the game to overtime, which included Birrell nailing a jumper with five seconds left.

In the first overtime, Westminster led 55-53 with 2:09 left. Salve Regina sank a pair of free throws a minute later and the game went to a second overtime after neither team scored in the final minute.

In the second overtime, Kimberly Horan's 3-pointer with 2:27 left put the Seahawks up 60-57 and Salve Regina hung on by making three of its final six free-throw attempts and limiting the Titans to only a lay-up by Hughes with eight seconds left.
