Lyons go 2-0 in Seahawks first NEWMAC doubleheader

NEWPORT, R.I. (Saturday, March 30, 2024) - Salve Regina University softball moves to 0-2 in the NEWMAC after their first conference doubleheader against the Wheaton College Lyons at Toppa Field on Saturday. Even though the Seahawks came back from a six-run deficit in game two, the Lyons won 5-1 and 10-8 respectively.

INSIDE THE MATCHUPS
Finals[1] Wheaton 5, Salve Regina 1; [2] Wheaton 10, Salve Regina 8
Records: Salve Regina (3-11,0-2 NEWMAC), Wheaton (7-8,2-1 NEWMAC)
All-Time History: Since the 1995 spring season, the Seahawks have a record of 1-9 against the Lyons. On March 13, 2019, when the foes last met, the Seahawks won 4-2.

The Wheaton College Lyons took charge of the first game with one run scoring in the second inning and two runs in the fourth before Seahawks' Chloe Nittoly (Milford, Conn.) was able to get the team on the board following Morganti Bello's (Corte Madera, Calif.) sacrifice fly to left field.

In game two, the Seahawks overcame 6-0 and 7-3 debts by staging a comeback in the fourth inning. Hailey Basso (Carmel, N.Y.) singled with runners on base, allowing Maddie Capetta (Raritan, N.J.) and Kylie Lanteri (Berlin, Conn.) to cross the plate. Capetta's double to left field sparked Christina Braid's (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) game tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Seahawks and Lyons entered extra innings. With a runner placed on second to start the inning, a NEWMAC softball regular-season procedure, the Lyons were able to get three runners to cross the plate and the Seahawks only managed to get baserunner Emily Lane (Tinton Falls, N.J.) home for a 10-8 final.
