NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, April 7, 2021) - Salve Regina University softball scored three times on the bottom of the sixth inning to overtake Western England University and finish with a 5-3 victory in Game One of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at Toppa Field in Newport.

Freshman right fielder Kaitlyn Bennett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) banged out five hits in the doubleheader including an RBI triple in the opener that gave Salve Regina an early lead. Western New England built a 3-1 advantage with two in the second and another in the third.

Salve Regina (5-5, 4-4 CCC) got one run back in its third on a bases-loaded wild pitch. In the Seahawk sixth, Maddie Capetta (Raritan, N.J.) tied the score with an RBI single that plated Drew Ceppetelli (Barrington, N.H.). Kendall Duprey's (Cranston, R.I.) bases-loaded walk brought Nikki Vanelli (Quakertown, Pa.) home with the go-ahead run and Talia Williams (Woonsocket, R.I.) added an insurance run with an RBI grounder to score Bennett.

Anna Mihalek (Farmington, Conn.) pitched a complete game for her first collegiate victory while allowing just eight hits and two earned runs.

In Game Two, Dina DiBlasio (Norwalk, Conn.) singled up the middle in the top of the first to score Taylor Keegan (Bristol, Conn.) with the first run. DiBlasio later scored on a Madison Mason (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to center field.

Capetta's double to left center scored Bennett in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit in half.

Kaleigh Blades (Merrimack, N.H.) singled to right center in the third to score Kailey Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) for a 3-1 lead. Western New England (3-3, 2-2 CCC) added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Paige Baca (Loma Linda, Calif.) and Keegan.

Trailing 6-1, the Seahawks chipped away with two in the sixth including a two-triple to right field by Christina Braid (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) who later scored on Duprey's single. In the seventh with two outs, Capetta doubled in Bennett and Braid singled home Capetta to draw the Seahawks within one, 6-5. Lauren Packer's (Manchester, Conn.) grounder to third drew a throw wide of the bag at first, and she was initially ruled safe while Braid crossed the plate to tie the score, but the home plate umpire overruled the call saying first baseman Maggie Marquardt (Enfield, Conn.) held the bag while stretching for the throw.

Salve Regina begins a six-game series with the University of New England on Saturday at Toppa Field.
