Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University softball improved to 6-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a sweep over visiting Western New England University at Toppa Field on Tuesday. In the opener, Seahawk freshman Julia Coute (North Dighton, Mass.) went 6.2 innings and picked up her second pitching victory while classmate Andi Nelson (Candia, N.H.) faced one batter for a one-out save. Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.), Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.), and Holly Kathios (Pelham, N.H.) each doubled while Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) tripled. Lombardo and Riley each scored three times. In the nightcap, Nelson started and pitched her second complete game of the season, with five strikeouts and only four hits allowed. Lombardo delivered a two-run double in a three-run third inning for the Seahawks.

Salve Regina closed within one win of .500 in the all-time series (15-16) and has won five of the last six meetings.

  1. Salve Regina junior Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) had three hits in six at bats with a double and triple, four runs scored, and three runs batted in.
  2. Salve Regina junior Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.) had four hits in six at bats with two doubles, four runs scored, and two runs batted in.
  3. Salve Regina junior Holly Kathios (Pelham, N.H.) doubled in each game and drove in three runs.

Key Stat of the Day
Western New England scored first in both games. In the nightcap, the Golden Bears were limited to one run and left nine runners on base, including eight in innings two through four (bases loaded in both second and fourth).

Turning Point
Freshman outfielder Jaycee Garrigan (Uxbridge, Mass.) drilled a two-run single in a three-run third inning of game one to break a 3-3 tie. After the Golden Bears scored in the top of the third of game two, Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) doubled in two runs in the bottom of the frame. Nelson worked out of bases-loaded jams in the second and fourth innings without allowing a run.
