NEWPORT, R.I. - After 16 days and more than a 16-degree drop in temperature, Salve Regina University softball finally returned to action when it hosted Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe University of New England at rainy Toppa Field on Saturday. The teams split with Salve Regina (3-8; 1-1 CCC) taking an 8-2 opener and the Nor'easters (9-7; 3-1 CCC) taking Game Two by the same score.

In the opener, Seahawk starter Nicole Parry (Quincy, Mass.) improved to 2-2 after limiting the visitors to two runs on five hits over seven innings.

Her teammates gave Parry all the support she needed with a four-run second inning. Catcher Genevieve Benoit (Swampscott, Mass.) led off the frame with a single to center field. Kara O'Riley (Acton, Mass.) sacrificed her to second and a subsequent Nor'easter error put runners at the corners with one out. Benoit scored the first run on an RBI ground out by Lauren Fountain (Cheshire, Conn.).

After Marissa Simpson (Brimfield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, Katie Napier (Medford, Mass.) singled in Sara Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) with the second run. Lexi Soucie (No. Easton, Mass.) followed with a two-run single to left field for the 4-0 Seahawk lead.

UNE got one run back in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Kelly Murphy (Cromwell, Conn.).

Napier's second RBI single came in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the four-run advantage. Two walks in the fifth inning proved costly to Nor'easter starter Lauren Doneski (Waltham, Mass.) who subsequently surrendered a three-run blast to O'Riley. The freshman infielder's roundtripper was the first of her career, and made it an 8-1 score for Salve Regina.

The Nor'easters scored an unearned run against Parry in the seventh for the final score.

In Game Two, with rain falling steadily, UNE enjoyed a four-run third inning. After loading the bases with a single and two walks, a two-out error led to the first two runs (both unearned) and then another error brought home two more runs (both unearned).

A bases-loaded walk to Melissa Figueiredo (East Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in the first run for Salve Regina in the bottom of the third. Fountain led off the frame with a single, Lauren Nicholson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) followed with a single, and then Simpson loaded the bases for the top of the order. Soucie reached on a fielder's choice when UNE shortstop Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham. N.H.) forced Fountain out at home.

The Nor'easters had a six-run advantage when Vaudreuil belted her third homerun of the season, a three-run shot off Seahawk starter Kelsey Boarman (No. Dighton, Mass.). Boarman went the distance and only allowed four earned runs.

Fountain scored Nelson with a two-out single to right center in the sixth, but the Nor'easters added another run in the seventh on a Jess Lemos (Chelmsford, Mass.) single. Starting pitcher Abby Lambert (Brockton, Mass.) raised her record to 4-2 for the Nor'easters who return to Rhode Island tomorrow for a twinbill with Roger Williams University.

Salve Regina has already received notice its CCC doubleheader at Wentworth has been postponed for Sunday. The Seahawks will attempt to make-up a pair with Endicott at Toppa Field on Monday.
