Curry eliminates Salve Regina

WENHAM, MASS. – The Curry College softball team used a seven-run first inning to defeat Salve Regina in the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship tournament, Thursday afternoon.

With the bases loaded and one out, senior Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.) singled home junior Heather Carrier (Scarborough, Maine) and Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.) to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead. Junior Taryn Vigeant (Terryville, Conn.) followed with a double to drive home sophomore Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.). Sophomore Allie Carver (Marlborough, Mass.) kept the hits coming with a single to score Carney. With the bases loaded and now two out, Flaherty cleared the bases with a double to give the Colonels a 7-0 lead after the first half inning.

Salve Regina answered with a run in the bottom of the first off an RBI-single from senior Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.) to score classmate Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.). The Seahawks added another run in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly from Melissa Figueiredo (East Bridgewater, Mass.) that brought home sophomore Lauren Nicholson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine).

The bats remained quiet for both teams over the middle innings until Curry added its final run of the game on an RBI-single up the middle from Carney to score LaRosa. The Colonels put two runners on in the top of the seventh but couldn't capitalize. Senior Jen Cruver (North Haven, Conn.)

Cruver took the loss in the circle for Salve Regina while Lundstrom picked up the complete-game win. Muehlbronner went 2-for-4 at the plate for Salve Regina while Figueiredo and Quintana each picked up an RBI.

Salve Regina ends the 2013 campaign with a 23-19 record while Curry lost to Western New England in its elimination game, 2-1 in 10 innings.
