WENHAM, Mass. — The Salve Regina University softball team swept both games of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader versus Gordon College on Saturday, earning a 13-1 victory in five innings in the day's opener before taking game two 3-0. With the wins the Seahawks improve to 13-3 in league action.
The Seahawks took an early lead in game one when Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) doubled to score Marissa Simpson (Brimfield, Mass.) and later scored on a Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.) single for the 2-0 lead after one. From there Salve surged offensively, plating seven runs in the top of the second behind a Jen Cruver (North Haven, Conn.) RBI single and a pair of three-run homers from Laura Anne Dinan (Monterey, Mass.) and Quintana to establish a healthy 9-0 lead over the host Scots. Unable to get their own bats going, the Scots went down by another four after two-run innings in both the third and fourth from the Seahawks, and though Gordon's Kerry McPartlan (Sr./Yonkers, N.Y.) tallied one RBI in the bottom of the fourth that was as close to the comeback as they would get as Salve iced the win with solid pitching down the stretch.
Cruver earned the win on the mound having allowed just four hits in 3.0 innings of work, while Hannah Lawrence (Sr./Somerset, Mass.) is credited with the loss for Gordon.
In game two, the score remained silent after two full innings of play until Salve took command of the lead in the top of three on a Quintana two-RBI double to make it a 2-0 ballgame. With neither team able to gain any traction at the plate, the Seahawks' Quintana stepped up yet again in the top of the seventh to rip an RBI-double and secure the eventual 3-0 win.
Cruver picked up another win for the Seahawks, improving her overall record to 19-12, while Gordon's Skylar Bareford (So./Stonington, Conn.) took the loss.
The Scots are on the road at Curry College for a CCC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 24 at 3:00p.m., while Salve hosts Endicott tomorrow at 12:00p.m.
