Seahawks take two from Eastern Nazarene

QUINCY, Mass. - The Salve Regina University softball team picked up two in the win column on Saturday afternoon as the visiting Seahawks won both games of The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene by scores of 10-5 and 5-2. The win moves Salve Regina to 11-21 overall and 9-9 in TCCC play while the pair of losses drops the Lady Lions to 12-18 and 10-10 in conference play.

 

Game One
Eastern Nazarene struck first in game one as the Lions put up two in their first at bats. Freshman second baseman Taylor Fleming and Amber Burns doubled to put two runners in scoring position for junior Hannah Moore. Moore laced a single that plated both baserunners and put the Lions out in front early.

 

Salve Regina immediately answered back as Jen Cruver and Kristen Parolise smashed back to back home runs to open the Seahawks half of the second. After Zeena Barbarita scored on an error, Christina Walsh singled home Deanna Ciccarelli to put Salve Regina ahead 4-2.

 

After a scoreless third, Salve Regina added to their lead in the fourth as Ali Muehlbronner doubled home Bryce McEwen and Walsh singled home Muehlbronner to push the Seahawks' lead to 6-2.

 

Salve Regina added a single run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Parolise before striking for three in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of a costly defensive lapse to stretch the lead to 10-2.

 

Eastern Nazarene battled back in their half of the three consecutive Lady Lions singled to open the inning. The third consecutive hit was a run scoring single nu Abbie Moore that cut the deficit to seven. A fielder's choice off of the bat of Julianne Atwater brought home Laura Giberson to bring the tally to 10-4 in favor of Salve Regina.

 

The Lady Lions went on to plate a single run in the bottom half of the seventh on another RBI single by Abbie Moore but the lead was too large to overcome as Salve Regina held on for the win.

 

Pacing the Salve Regina offense was Walsh who finished 3 for 4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Muehlbronner finished with two hits and drove in a run while scoring twice. Cruver and Parolise each finished 2 for 4 with two RBI while sophomore Jillian Quintana went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate.

 

For the Lady Lions, Hannah Moore led the way with three hits in four trips to the plate. Moore also drove in two runs and scored twice.

 

Fleming, Giberson each had two hits while Abbie Moore picked up two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

 

Cruver added to her impressive day picking up the win on the mound for Salve Regina. She allower five runs on twelve hits and struck out five in the complete game victory.

 

Jamie Block took the loss in the circle for the Lady Lions allowing 10 runs, only five of which were earned, in the complete game effort.

 

Game Two
In the backend of Staurday's doubleheader, a pitching duel ensued as Salve Regina's Marissa Simpson and Eastern Nazarene's Abbie Moore were very impressive throughout their outings.

 

The Lions stuck first as freshman Samantha Losano singled home Abbie Moore to give Eastern Nazarene the early 1-0 lead.

 

Eastern Nazarene added another run in the fourth as Abbie Moore drove in her older sister, Hannah Moore, to double the lead, 2-0.

 

Salve Regina finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning as Walsh doubled home Muehlbronner and Ciccarelli to tie it up at two apiece.

 

After a scoreless sixth, Salve Regina rallied for three runs against relief pitcher Hannah Moore to build their eventual lead to 5-2. The three run inning was capped by a two run double off the bat of Cruver that put the Seahawks ahead for good.

 

Walsh had a pair of hits in game two to bring her total for the day to five. Walsh also drove in a pair of runs in game two. Cruver finished game two 2 for 4 with two RBI while Jennifer Edine picked up three hits.

 

Eastern Nazarene's Abbie Moore finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored in game two to pace the Lady Lions' offense.

 

Abbie Moore allowed just two earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work for the Lions.

 

Simpson gave up only six hits and let up only two earned runs in the complete game victory.

 

Eastern Nazarene will take a break from conference play on Tuesday as the Lady Lions travel to Wheelock College for a 3 p.m.doubleheader. Salve Regina will host Anna Maria at home tomorrow in a noon twinbill.
