Anchorwomen sweep Seahawks in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior third baseman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, NH) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles, a home run (2), one steal and five RBI as Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader from Salve Regina University at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

RIC (20-3) took game one, 5-2, and shut out the Seahawks (9-21), 7-0, in the nightcap. The Anchorwomen, who won for the 20th consecutive time, reaches the 20-win milestone for the 13th straight campaign.

Senior Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) hurled six innings of shutout ball in two appearances, picking up the win (6-0) in relief of sophomore starter Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) in game one. Junior Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) earned the win (5-1) in game two, allowing just three hits in four innings, before giving way to Berard for the final three frames.

Johnson struggled in the top of the first inning, spotting the Seahawks a 2-0 lead right off the bat. After starting the game with a strikeout, she loaded the bases on a single, walk and hit batsman. Junior third baseman Kristen Parolise (Hamden, CT) brought in the first run with an RBI fielder's choice. Sophomore left fielder Zeena Barbarita (Johnston, RI) worked a bases loaded walk to bring in SRU's other run.

The Anchorwomen got one run back in the second as senior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) smacked a singled to left field and came home on Bailey's RBI double.

The hosts notched the equalizer in the bottom of the fourth on senior designated hitter Laura DeNoncour's (Johnston, RI) RBI single.

Berard came on in the fifth and was able to get a strikeout and a ground out to get out of a one out bases loaded jam. Freshman Marissa Simpson (Brimfield, MA) came on in relief of Salve Regina sophomore starter Jenna Cruver (North Haven, CT) in the fifth and was able to get a 1-2-3 inning.

Berard did the same to the visitors in the top of the sixth and RIC was able to break the game open in the home half of the frame. Panarelli picked up an infield single and Bailey brought her home on her one out RBI double to right field. With runners on second and third and two down, freshman left fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) went the other way with a double down the right field line to bring in two and stake RIC to a 5-2 lead. Berard slammed the door, setting down the Seahawks in order, in the seventh to secure the win.

Simpson got the start in game two for SRU and was tagged for two runs in the second, courtesy of a senior catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainfield, CT) double. With runners on second and third in the third, Bailey blasted her second homer of the season down the left field line to break the game open. RIC added two more runs in the fourth on a Kayla Jandreau sacrifice fly and a sophomore second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) RBI single.

Simpson took the losses in both games (5-8).

Panarelli went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in game one. Kayla Jandreau went 2-for-6 with three RBI and three steals. Marisa Jandreau went 3-for-7 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore outfielder Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, RI) went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
