Pilgrims sweep doubleheader from Seahawks

HENNIKER, N.H. - New England College softball extended its winning streak to four games sweeping the visiting Salve Regain Seahawks Saturday afternoon in Henniker. With the two wins the Pilgrims improve to 6-14 overall and even their conference record at 5-5. The losses drop the Seahawks to 9-9 on the season and 4-6 in conference play.

In game on NEC pitcher Bethany Forshaw allowing just one earned run on seven Seahawk hits leading the Pilgrims to the 4-1 victory. NEC would plate three runs in the home half of the first inning as Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine) would open the inning with a single, followed by a Rachel White (Arlington, Mass.) walk and a two--un double by Melinda Robbins (Oxford, Mass.) Robbins would eventually come around to score on a Kristen Purdy (Candia, N.H.) single.

The Pilgrims would tack on an unearned run in the fifth. The Seahawks would get a run back in the sixth as junior Christina Walsh (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) opened the inning with a double and come around to score on a freshman Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.) ground out.

NEC's Kristen Purdy finished the game with two hits and Rachel White scored twice for the Pilgrims. Leading the way for Salve Regina at the plate was Walsh, who had two hits.

On the mound for Salve Regina in game one was senior Sarah Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.) who allowed three earned runs on six hits.

In game two the Seahawks had a 2-1 advantage heading into the sixth inning but NEC's Melinda Robbins hit a two-run blast in the home half of the sixth leading the Pilgrims to the 3-2 victory.

The Seahawks got a run in the first inning as Walsh would reach on a double and come around to score on a passed ball. Salve Regina extended its lead to 2-0 in the fourth as Quintana led off the inning with a solo homerun. NEC got a run back in the home half of the fifth inning as Purdy would open the inning with a single and come around to score on a Bethany Forshaw single. NEC's Melinda Robbins then unload with a two-run shot in the sixth scoring Teraysa White, who opened the inning with a double, giving the Pilgrims the 3-2 win.

Salve Regina's freshman Jen Cruver (North Haven, Conn.) singed twice for the Seahawks. On the mound for Salve Regina was Jakiela, who allowed just four hits.

Picking up the win on the mound for NEC was Gabrielle Timms (Clark Summit, Pa.), who allowed two earned runs on five hits.
