WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Senior captain Sean Hughes (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and junior captain Billy Martin (West Islip, N.Y.) led Salve Regina to an improved finish in the ECAC Division III Cross Country Championship on Saturday. The Seahawks placed 26th of 40 teams, up five spots from 2014.

Hughes was the first Seahawk across the finish line at 28:25.29, good for 69th place in the field of 277 runners. Martin, in only his second race in the last month, was the next scorer for Salve Regina, finishing at 29:17.76.

Senior captain Slater Roosa (Woodbury, Conn.) ran at No. 3, finishing at 30:30.50, while junior Kevin Onofreo (Middlefield, Conn.) and sophomore Collin Travassos (Barrington, R.I.) rounded out the scoring at 31:23.08 and 31:31.66.

Freshman Dan Donnelly (Portsmouth, R.I.) ran at No. 6, crossing the finish line at 32:52.05, and senior Matt Sinkewicz (Colchester, Conn.) ran at No. 7, finishing at 34:36.37.

The race marked the first postseason appearances for Travassos and Donnelly, and a final postseason appearance for Sinkewicz, who last appeared in the ECAC meet in 2012 – his freshman year.

"This was valuable experience for Collin and Dan, as I think that both will play contributing roles for us in the years to come," said head coach Rob McGuinness. "And I'm pleased that we could close Matt's career on a better note. He was part of a large group that took a wrong turn in the conference meet, and he was on pace to do something good that day. This was a much better finish for a guy who has been a vital part of our program for the last four years."

Amherst College placed three scorers in the top 10 on the way to winning the team title with a score of 53. Williams College was second with 77 points, followed by Middlebury (117), Colby (145) and Tufts (152). Williams sophomore Liam Simpson won the individual title in 26:24.13, holding off a furious finishing kick from Amherst junior Steven Lucey, who finished second in 26:24.54.

Salve Regina will conclude the 2015 cross country campaign at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship on Nov. 14.
