Steady progress for Seahawk men's cross country

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The NCAA Division III New England Regional Cross Country Championship marked another show of steady progress for the Salve Regina University men's cross country team. The Seahawks finished 41st out of 50 scoring teams, earning Salve's highest regional placement since the program was reconstituted in 2005.

Freshman Sean Hughes (Old Saybrook, Conn.) set the pace, finishing in 27:15. Hughes' time was 30 seconds faster than his previous performance on the 8,000-meter course Westfield State University – a 27:45 finish in the James Earley Invitational on Oct. 6.

Freshman Timothy Roosa (Woodbury, Conn.) was the Seahawks' second man, crossing the finish line in 30:23. Freshman Ben Campbell (Carolina, R.I.), freshman Daniel LaBrie (East Providence, R.I.) and freshman Matt Sinkewicz (Colchester, Conn.) rounded out the scoring five, finishing in 32:25, 32:51 and 33:24 respectively.

Roosa, Campbell and Sinkewicz each dropped two minutes or more from their previous race performances at Westfield State.

Sophomore Jack Simpson (Lynn, Mass.) and freshman Josh Critchley (Torrington, Conn.) were the sixth and seventh men for the Seahawks, finishing in 33:38 and 36:31.

Salve Regina had last scored in the regional championship meet in 2010, when the team finished 46th of 49. Salve finished 44th of 45 teams in 2009 and 47th of 47 teams in 2007. The team did not enter a full scoring contingent in 2005, 2006, 2008 or 2011.
