DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sophomore Anthony Joseph (Fairhaven, Mass.) and junior Patrick Pacheco (Fall River, Mass.) both rallied for three-set victories in singles to help lift the Corsairs to their first win of the season in a 7-2 match with Salve Regina on Tuesday.

How it Happened
All six Corsairs to compete picked up at least one win between the singles and doubles flights on the afternoon. In doubles competition, UMass Dartmouth jumped out to the early lead, winning two of the three pairings. Senior Corey Rafter (Franklin, Mass.) and Joseph notched the decisive victory at the top flight with an 8-3 final. The No. 3 combination of senior Summer Forest-Bulley (Turners Falls, Mass.) and junior Zach Pavao (Somerset, Mass.) cruised to an 8-2 win. The Corsairs dropped only No. 2 doubles after the Seahawks pairing of Aaron White (Falmouth, Mass.) and Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I.) rallied to defeat Pacheco and Justin Torres (Dighton, Mass.), 8-5.

UMass Dartmouth then held off Salve Regina in singles, dropping just one decision. Joseph and Pacheco both battled back in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights, respectively, to put the damper on any Seahawk comeback. Joseph prevailed over Kevin Brocks (Albany, N.Y.) by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Pacheco rallied after a 0-6 first set for a 6-3 score in the second and hard-fought 7-5 margin in the third over DJ Bisaillon (Watertown, Conn.).

Forest-Bulley and Pavao triumphed in their matches in No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Both contests finished with the same score of 6-2, 6-1. Torres had a tightly contested match, eventually winning the point 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 over Alessio Ayuninjam (Tiverton, R.I.).

Inside the Numbers

  • With Forest-Bulley's win at No. 5 singles, the senior captain rises 2-2 on the year and has claimed his last two matchups.
  • Tuesday marks the fifth straight win for the Corsairs over Salve Regina, dating back to the 2005-06 season.
