Seahawks swing past Colonels, 8-1

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University men's tennis team went on the road and defeated Curry College by a score of 8-1 during a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match on Wednesday. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 2-12 (2-3 CCC) on the season, while the Colonels fall to 0-10 (0-3 CCC).

The Seahawks began the match by taking two of three doubles matches. Senior Zachary Rosenfeld (Easton, Conn.) and junior Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn.) paired up for an impressive 8-0 victory at No.1 doubles, while freshmen Mike Gallerani (Fairfield, Conn.) and Malcolm Marshall (Topsham, Mass.) battled for an 8-5 win from the No.3 doubles slot.

Salve Regina ran away with the contest during singles play, earning victories in all six matches. Rosenfeld was victorious in No.1 singles (6-0, 6-1) while Isch was unblemished at No.2 singles, capturing a 6-0, 6-0 win. Junior Kenneth McCormack (Falmouth, Mass.) and Gallerani earned secured 6-1, 6-2 victories from the No.3 and No.5 slot, respectively, while Marshall took No.6 singles 6-0, 6-2. The most exciting match of the day came at No.4 singles where sophomore Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) fought his way to a three set victory. After earning a 7-6 victory in the first set with a 7-4 tie breaker, Gunning dropped the second set 6-3. Undeterred, the Salve Regina sophomore battled his way to a 10-6 victory in the third set tiebreaker.

The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday when they host Eastern Nazarene in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match beginning at 1 p.m.
