Jumbos jump to a win over Seahawks

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's tennis opened its 2011-12 season at home against Tufts University on Sunday. The Jumbos, in Newport just after blanking Roger Williams University in Bristol earlier in the day, dealt a 9-0 defeat to the Seahawks.

The Seahawks' Connecticut connection, senior Zachary Rosenfeld (Easton, Conn.) and junior Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn.), held serve through the first four games with Andrew Lutz (Baltimore, Md.) and Kai Victoria (Miami, Fla.). The Jumbos' top pair won the next five games before Rosenfeld held serve to draw closer, 7-3, but Tufts served out the next game at love to win the match.

Lutz later won a straight-set singles match at first singles against Seahawk senior Brian Castrichini (Winchester, Mass.).

"We were most competitive at the top positions," said first-year Seahawk head coach Kevin Pease. "All our players remained positive and focused on performance goals. Very pleased with our attitudes."

Salve Regina (0-1) next plays at Stonehill College on Thursday while Tufts (2-0) competes in the ITA regionals.
