Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University men's soccer team drew 2-2 with Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday night.

The Golden Bears led 1-0 at the half, only to see Alessandro Oggiano (Stoughton, Mass.) score in the 47th and 51st to put the Seahawks in front early in the second half. Aidan Rego (Brockton, Mass.) found the equalizer in the 64th and neither team found the back of the net again in regulation or through two overtime periods.

Series and Streaks
The Golden Bears own a 7-4-4 record all-time versus Salve Regina.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina senior Alessandro Oggiano scored two goals in a span of 4:11 to open the second half. The first by blocking kick from the goalie back into the net, the second on a left-footed shot from 15 yards away that snuck inside the far bar off a feed from Rich Ventura (Floral Park, N.Y.).
  2. Salve Regina senior Nathan Reid (Magnolia, Del.) made seven saves and is 8-3-2 in net on the season.
  3. Western New England sophomore Aidan Rego scored his first career goal in the 64th to even the score 2-2.

Turning Point
Rego scored for the Golden Bears on a reentry off of a corner to even the score 2-2 in the 64th. Both teams traded quality scoring chances but could not beat the keepers. After regulation the Golden Bears had the only shot in the first overtime, saved by Reid, and the Seahawks outshot the Golden Bears 2-0 in the second extra frame, but were also stymied by the visitor's keeper.

Quick Hits

  • Brady Allen (Willington, Conn.) made seven saves in regulation and falls to 6-4-3 in net. Ryan Suprin (Clinton, Mass.) saw action between the pipes for both overtime frames and made one save to preserve the tie.
  • Salve Regina had a 19-16 edge in shots, 10-9 in shots on goal.
  • Both teams attempted four corner kicks.

Quoteables
"Tonight was a tough and physical battle between two of the better teams in the confernce from the past few years.  I thought we did reasonably well at matching up with Western New England's aireal pressence and trying to stop their chances on their long throw-ins.  When we got the ball down to the deck and played quickly through the midfield third, we were more dangerous.  I thought we changed the point of attack decently, though I still think that we need to do that quicker and with more urgency.  At this stage in the season, all of the conference teams are fighting for points and the margins for error are razor thin.  You can't get away with a poorly targeted pass or a bad touch in the midfield third any more… teams are looking to jump on those chances and capitlize.  Every touch, every possession, every scoring chance matters and you have to capitalize in those match critical moments to be successful on the day.  Now our attention has to turn to Roger Williams and the forthcoming rivalry match this Saturday." -head coach Craig O'Rourke II
