SEAHAWK MEN'S SOCCER RESULTS
No. 2 Salve Regina 1, No. 7 Nichols 0
Toppa Field - Newport, R.I.
Sunday, October 28, 2018

Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - No. 2 Salve Regina University got a goal in the 80th minute from senior Conor Woods (Otisville, N.Y.) on a feed from freshman Rich Ventura (Floral Park, N.Y.) to account for the only score as the Seahawks defeated No. 7 Nichols College in 2018 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Soccer Championships quarterfinal at Toppa Field in Newport. The Seahawks (16-0-3) remain unbeaten in 2018 and advance to the conference semifinal on Wednesday, October 31, where they will host the winner of No. 3 Gordon College and No. 6 University of New England. The Bison end their season with a 10-7-1 mark.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina has won its last two games this season against Nichols, 4-0 on Wednesday and 1-0 today. The Seahawks have a 21-8-2 advantage in the all-time series and have won six of the last nine meetings.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina senior goalkeeper Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) made seven saves, all before Woods scored the game's only goal, preserving his 10th shutout of the season.
  2. Salve Regina senior back Conor Woods (Otisville, N.Y.) converted a cross from freshman midfielder Rich Ventura (Floral Park, N.Y.) in the 80th minute to score the game's only goal.
  3. Nichols junior forward Chris Noga (Belchertown, Mass.) led all players with five shots, making Payan pull out some big stops.

Key Stat of the Game
Officials checked physical play early, but nonetheless called 17 fouls on the Bison and five on the Seahawks. The first yellow card did not appear until the second minute of the second half; Nichols finished with six yellow cards.

Turning Point
Woods scored at 79:06 and made the final 11 minutes for the Seahawks more of a clock management exercise than a need to score. Woods nearly added an insurance goal in the 84th minute but went wide of the right post.
