Corsairs sink Seahawks

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) registered his first collegiate hat trick, as the Corsair offense struck for four goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Salve Regina Wednesday night in non-conference action.

How it Happened

Vidal got the Corsairs on the board in the 21^st minute, firing a shot into the top left corner of the Seahawks' cage from 30 yards out. Junior Austin Dias (Smithfield, R.I.) freed Vidal with a through-ball, setting up the goal.

Salve Regina sophomore Jared Warren (Georgetown, Mass.) buried the cross from junior Christopher Anderson (Trumbull, Conn.) to even the match in the 37^th minute.

UMass Dartmouth regained the lead five minutes later when Vidal broke through the Seahawks' back line on a pass from classmate Troy Martins (Attleboro, Mass.), and found the back of the net.

Senior Stephan Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.) followed Vidal's lead and got a goal of his own to start the second half. Sophomore John Correia (Peabody, Mass.) was credited with the assist after feeding Teixeira before his strike.

Vidal then capped his night with only three minutes remaining, putting in the rebound off a Jake Moreira (Burlington, Mass.) shot.

Inside the Numbers

• Senior Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) captured the victory for the Corsairs, making five saves on the evening. Carranza made a kick save on a point blank shot to keep the game scoreless early. He also made back-to-back key saves in the 57^thminute to hold the lead.
•  Sophomore Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) made six saves, but took the loss for the Seahawks.
• The Corsairs outshot Salve Regina 28-10, and held the advantage in corner kicks at 5-1.  
• With six points in today's match, Vidal now sits at 16 points on the season and surpasses his total of 14 from the 2015 season.
• The Corsairs last started at 5-1 in 2012, eventually finishing 12-7, good enough to place third in the Little East Conference.
