MIT rallies past Seahawks in overtime, 4-3

NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior Zachary Kabelac (Potomac, Md.) scored his second goal of the game 4:14 into the second overtime to lift the MIT men's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Salve Regina University in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Brother Michael Reynolds Field.

Sophomore Ben Lewis (West Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Jonathan Tebes (Hamden, Conn.) also scored for the Engineers, who improved to 6-0 all-time against the Seahawks. Junior Nicodemo Camarda (Burlington, N.J.) scored twice for the Seahawks while junior Sean McAllister (North Arlington, N.J.) also tallied. The game was the season-opener for both clubs.

With the game tied at two and less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Camarda chipped home a rebound off a shot from senior tri-captain Ken Johnson (Colonia, N.J.) to put the Seahawks in front, 3-2. Just 1:11 later, however, Terbes took a pass from freshman Matthew Monheit (Abington, Pa.), turned and fired a shot inside the left post to even the game at three.

After a scoreless 10-minute overtime period, senior Christian Therkelsen (Nesbru, Norway) chipped a ball into the slot that was redirected by Kabelac and past sophomore Devin O'Gorman (Canton, Mass.), who was making his first collegiate start, for the game-winner at 104:14 in the second extra session.

The Engineers scored the only goal of the first half as Therkelsen picked up the first of his two assists on the afternoon 3:37 into the contest. Off a corner kick, he fed a ball into the box that was headed home by Kaberlac.

Camarda tied the game at one 5:14 into the second half as he knocked in a pass from McAllister at the left post. Less than 10 minutes later, McAllister broke down the right side, split a pair of defenders, and fired a shot across the net and into the left side of the net to put the Seahawks in front for the first time, 2-1, at 59:10. Lewis headed in a corner from senior Kevin Chou (Fremont, Calif.) at 67:41 to tie the game at two.

Each team finished the contest with 15 shots. O'Gorman made five saves in his debut while junior Dylan Rankin (Providence, R.I.) made one save to earn the win.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to North Dartmouth, Mass. for a 2 .m. contest with the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth. The Engineers face Eastern Connecticut State this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Babson College.
