Dominant third quarter helps Seahawks to 11-8 victory over Hawks

BRISTOL, R.I. - After being tied 5-5 at halftime the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team scored the first six goals of the second half, including a 5-0 run in the third quarter to take command of an 11-8 victory over Roger Williams University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday.

It is juts the second win all-time for the Seahawks versus Roger Williams. The Hawks still hold a 20-2 advantage in the series.

Pat Leary (Wakefield, Mass.) scored first for Salve Regina at the 10:29 mark. Roger Williams would come back with a pair of goals from Justin MacIntyre (Norwalk, Conn.) and Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) in the final four minutes for a 2-1 lead entering the second quarter.

Leary, Andrew Fera (Cranston, R.I.), and Brendan Kelly (Long Beach, N.Y.) each scored over the first four minutes of the quarter to go up 4-3. Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.) and Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) sandwich a pair of goals around a Fera score in the last five minutes to bring the game to a 5-5 tie entering halftime.

Salve Regina pulled away in the third quarter, as the Seahawks outscored Roger Williams 5-0 in the period to take a commanding 10-5 lead going into the fourth. Kelly added another goal at the 13:40 mark for a six-goal lead. Navarro came back with a goal less than a minute later for the Hawks. Grier and Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) each scored later in the period but the Hawks could not tally three more to send the game into overtime.

Matt D'Amore (Duxbury, Mass.) made 12 saves in the win. Leary had five points on four goals and an assist. Fera finished with three goals and an assist.

Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) made ten saves in the loss. Navarro scored twice off the bench. Drew Mullin (Ridgefield, Conn.) added four ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Roger Williams (5-4, 1-1 CCC) takes on Endicott on Wednesday while Salve Regina (6-3, 1-1 CCC) welcomes SUNY Maritime on the same day.
