Colonels march forward 6-1 over Seahawks

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Friday, February 2, 2024)-- In another Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup the Salve Regina men's ice hockey team fell 6-1 to current first ranked CCC team, the Curry College Colonels, in game one of a two-game series. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 1, Curry 6
Records: Salve Regina (13-6-2, 8-4-2 CCC), Curry (16-4-1, 11-3-0 CCC)
All-Time Series: Since the 2007-08 season Salve Regina is 11-19-3 against Curry. The teams last met on Friday, February 03, 2023, and it was a 4-3 loss. 

BREAKDOWN: 

The action did not begin until the second period, but after 20 minutes the Colonels sprang to life by scoring the first two goals of the day consecutively. Curry's Matt Connor and Ben Biester netted the puck within 15 seconds of each other. Five minutes later Matthew Fawcett received the puck from Parker Mabbett just a few feet in front of the crease and got off a backhanded shot for a 2-1 game. 

Just when it looked like the contest would get close again, Connor and Biester found the net for the Colonels and the teams entered period three with a 4-1 score inf favor of Curry. In the last four minutes of play Colonels' George Vonakis shot off an empty-netter and and Killian Rowlee followed him up for a 6-1 Curry win. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Seahawks' Cayden Bailey faced 35 shots on net. 
  • Colonels' Shane Soderwall made 31 stops, giving him a winning record of 10-4-0. 
  • Curry went 2-4 and Salve Regina went 0-6 on the power play. 

ON THE HORIZON: 

Tomorrow, February 3, men's ice hockey will see the Colonels again. Curry will host Salve Regina at 3 p.m. at the Canton Ice House in Milton, Massachusetts.
