MIDDLETOWN, R.I.-- The Salve Regina men's ice hockey team accomplished another CCC win on Friday night for a 3-0 Western New England Golden Bears shutout.

What started out as a five-minute power play for the Golder Bears ended in a shorthand goal for Salve Regina and the team just kept going from there.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 3, Western New England 0
Records: Salve Regina (7-1,5-0), Western New England (2-4-1,1-3-1)
All-Time Series: Before the contest commenced the Seahawks had an 31-9 all-time record against the Golden Bears. Last February the teams faced off and Salve Regina won 5-2.

BREAKDOWN:

  • Period I: The game was physical from the beginning and started off with a seahawk penalty for boarding. Nevertheless, Salve Regina fought a tough five on four dynamic and prevailed without allowing any Golden Bear progress. The Seahawks turned a five-minute major interference penalty into a goal, not letting the man-down situation stop them. Matthew Brunton scored off an assist from Parker Mabbett with 3:50 remaining in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Going into the first break, the Seahawks were up 1-0.
  • Period II: Neither team scored in the second period. Despite the lack of scoring, the duel continued. The Golden Bears forced Cayden Bailey to make seven saves and Anthony Aureliano made 12 saves, facing a strong Seahawk offensive unit. Western New England was called for interference with 7:04 remaining before the final intermission but nothing came of the penalty.
  • Period III: Breaking the game wide open and ensuring a shutout victory, Salve Regina scored twice in the final period. The team was determined to safely secure their lead and Ian Tookenay saw a straight path to the net. In unassisted effort Tookenay earned the Seahawks their second goal of the night midway through the period. The success was sealed when Matthew Brunton finished off the scoring with an empty net, shorthand goal at 17:50 down.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Seahawks outshot the Golden Bears 40 to 14 over the course of the contest.
  • Cayden Bailey remained in net for the entire game, and Golden Bears' Anthony Aureliano was the team's sole goalie, leaving the net for 13 seconds during the matchup.
  • Salve Regina went on the penalty kill three times during the evening, serving nine minutes total.
  • Western New England served six minutes on three infractions.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH KLANN:

"We're back into conference play after Albertus Magnus. We missed an opportunity against them on Tuesday night. They worked extremely hard, and we didn't take them as seriously as we should have, and they made us pay for it. For us, getting back to focusing in and getting into league play helped us continue to pick up points in the CCC.

Western New England works extremely hard and they're getting better each game, we've seen that. They're a team that we can't take lightly. We have to reset a little bit more and change a couple of things to get back after it on Sunday. The main thing is just worrying about ourselves. We have to tighten the bolts on some things to make sure our system is there, and everybody is buying into it." - head coach Zech Klann

ON THE HORIZON:

On Sunday, November 19 Salve Regina will vist the Golden Bears at their home ice in Springfield, Massachusetts at 6 p.m.
