Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Visiting sixth seeded Nichols College upset the third seeded Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team in the quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament by a 3-1 final Saturday night.

Series and Streaks
The all-time series is now even at 23-23-4.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Nichols junior Korbinian Lutz (Munchen, Germany) stopped 44 shots to improve to 6-13-1 in net this season.
  2. Nichols senior Curtis Carlson (Lakewood, N.Y.) assisted on the first two Bison goals, and scored unassisted on the empty net to cap off his three-point night.
  3. Salve Regina junior Cayden Kraus (East St. Paul, Man.) scored the lone Seahawks goal at 9:39 of the third period to make it a one-score game.

Turning Point
Peter Miko (Zlin, Czech Republic) scored 2:48 into the third period to give the Bison a 2-0 advantage. After a flurry of near misses, the Seahawks finally got on the board when Kraus blasted in a one-timer from the right side on a diagonal feed from Spencer Stanley (Green Oak, Mich.) to make it 2-1 at 9:39. The Seahawks continued to relentlessly put shots on the net, but the Nichols netminder continued to turn away shots. Still trailing by one the Seahawks pulled the goalie for the extra attacker in the final two minutes. After a faceoff win by the Seahawks, Carlson jumped in for Nichols and poked the puck away down the board to neutral ice. He sprinted onto it and went in all alone to score the empty net goal and clinch the road playoff win for the Bison.
