Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - The Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team battled to a 2-2 draw with visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology, but picked up an extra point with a shootout victory thanks to freshman Kaiden Kanderka's (Red Deer, Alta.) third round goal in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Friday evening.

The Leopards lead the all-time series 28-10-4.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina sophomore Seth Benson (Moorhead, Minn.) scored both of the Seahawks goals in the second period.
  2. Wentworth junior Kevin Obssuth (Chester, N.J.) scored the game-tying goal on the powerplay in the third period.
  3. Salve Regina senior Nicholas Latinovich (Vaughn, Ont.) made 41 saves, including five crucial stops in the overtime period to improve to 12-4-2 this season.

Turning Point
After leading 1-0, then surrendering two unanswered in the second period the Leopards knotted the game up at 2-2 when Kevin Obssuth wristed home the equalizer on the poweplay with 4:16 remaining in regulation. Both teams traded chances, but the game went to an extra frame. In the overtime both teams took advantage of the open ice with the 3-on-3 and generated numerous chances. However, the goaltenders were up to the task. Latinovich stopped five shoots in the extra period while Will Oliver (Chesterfield, N.J.) stopped three shots.

After finishing with a 2-2 draw the teams moved on to the shootout where Kaiden Kanderka was the hero, collecting his second shootout victory goal of the season to give the Seahawks an extra point in the CCC standings.
