Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Visiting University of New England defeated the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team 3-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Monday night.

Series and Streaks
The Nor'easters have won four in a row in the series and now lead 7-6-0 all-time versus Salve Regina.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. UNE graduate student Chris Jones (Seattle, Wash.) scored the go-ahead goal for the Nor'easters on the powerplay at 10:35 of the third.
  2. UNE sophomore Billy Girard IV (Boca Raton, Fla.) made 31 saves to improve to 8-2-1 in net on the season.
  3. Salve Regina senior Nicholas Latinovich (Vaugh, Ont.) made 28 saves in the loss to fall to 9-4-0 between the pipes.

Turning Point
Jones' power play tally midway through the third gave the Nor'easters their first lead after trailing 1-0 and 2-1 in the game. The Seahawks still trailed by one and looked to pull the goalie with 2 mins to play while on a powerplay for a 6-on-4 but a delay of game penalty on Salve Regina ended that opportunity. The Seahawks still pulled Latinovich for the last 1:33 and skated 5-on-4 with the empty net but were not able to find the equalizer and time ran out.

Quick Hits

  • George Sennott (North Andover, Mass.) started the scoring with his sixth goal of the season to put Salve Regina on top 1-0 in the first period.
  • Chad Merrell (Boca Raton Fla.) answered with two minutes remaining in the opening frame for the Nor'easters to tie things 1-1.
  • Seth Benson (Moorhead, Minn.) stuck for his seventh of the season on the powerplay in the second period for a 2-1 Seahawks advantage at 1:31, but minutes later Daniel Winslow (Fairfield, Conn.) responded with a powerplay goal of his own during a 5-on-3 for the Nor'easters to knot things 2-2.
  • Salve Regina held a 33-31 edge in shots.
  • The Seahawks went 1-for-6 on the powerplay while the Nor'easters were 2-for-8.
