Seahawks fade late, fall to Becker 6-5 in OT

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The Salve Regina University men's hockey team dropped a 6-5 overtime decision to Becker College on Wednesday night at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink. The loss drops the Seahawks to 6-18-0 (2-11-0 ECAC), while the Hawks improve to 9-13-2 (4-8-1 ECAC).

Junior William Gomolinski(Western Springs, Ill.) paced the Salve Regina offense with two points on a pair of goals, while freshman John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) added both a goal and an assist in the loss. Sophomore David Watkins (Natick, Mass.), and freshman Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) each scored one goal, while junior Mike Cenisio (Milan, Italy), junior Jacob Hutt (Menlo Park, Calif.), freshman Kevin Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), and sophomore Trey Rasmussen (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) each dished-out an assist.

Freshman Ronald Kokas (Miramar, Fla.) led all players with four points (2g, 2a) for Becker, while freshman Cody Edwards (Kansas City, Miss.) and junior David Graham (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) each contributed two goals and an assist in the win. Sophomore Korby Anderson (Owantonna, Minn.) and junior Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) each had a pair of assists, while senior goalie Jake Rosenthal (Wantagh, N.Y.) made 32 saves in net to improve to 6-9-2 on the year.

The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted tally by Watkins at the 5:40 mark of the opening period.

The Hawks answered back to tie the game just before the first intermission as Kokas set up Edwards for his first score of the night.

After Salve Regina reclaimed the lead on a Gomolinski goal just 2:46 seconds into the second period, the Hawks tied the score at 2-all on a power play marker by Kokas.

The Seahawks then grabbed their third lead of the game, receiving a power play goal of their own as Kavanagh fed Scorcia for the go-ahead score.

Salve Regina extended their lead to 5-2 with goals from Gomolinski and Goodwin in the opening four minutes of the third period.

The Seahawks still held a three-goal lead with under six minutes remaining in the third frame when Becker's David Graham scored consecutive goals within 65 seconds of each other to bring the Hawks back within one score.

Becker went on the power play with 1:09 remaining in the period, and with Salve Regina still holding a 5-4 lead, the Hawks pulled their goalie to give them a 6-on-4 man-advantage.

The Hawks converted on the power play opportunity as Kokas tied the game on his second goal of the contest with just 54 seconds remaining in the period.

The two teams batted through the first four minutes of overtime, with neither side managing to score. Needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Seahawks pulled their goalie in a desperate attempt to score. However, the move backfired and led to an open-net game-winning score by Edwards to lift Becker to the 6-5 victory.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday. Becker will hit the road to battle Suffolk at 4 p.m., while the Seahawks will faceoff against Wentworth as they celebrate Senior Night at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink at 7 p.m.
